The world is a troubled place right now, filled with threats like authoritarianism, climate change and accelerating technological change. And while we all may know this, it’s understandable that we may want to avoid thinking, or feeling, about it. Even so, it’s got to be affecting each and every one of us, including our clients and group members. How could it not when so many mainstays of our familiar world seem to be crumbling?
This workshop will examine the basics of our intersecting crises and study the benefits for us as therapists to working explicitly with the emotional aspects of this material in group settings. Using the hallmark techniques of Modern Analytic group therapy, including progressive emotional communication and working with resistance, we’ll explore the power of group process to help us with our experiences in today’s world. We will all do better, whether as individuals or as a collective, if we have the skills to build resilient connections with each other in the face of stirring circumstances.

Anna Graybeal is a psychologist and Certified Group Therapist in private practice in Austin, Texas for over 20 years. Anna currently leads 4 ongoing weekly groups in her practice, one of which is a training group for climate-and-systems aware therapists. She remains a longtime student of Modern Analytic psychotherapy both in Austin and at the Center for Group Studies in New York and is also a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Before becoming a psychologist, she followed a longstanding love for animals and earned a PhD in evolutionary biology.
